Crash course in becoming your own travel agent

I was lucky enough to be invited to my great nephew's wedding in San Diego a few days after Christmas. The last time I did a long flight was when the groom was about 6 months old & I was pretty mobile using just sticks.  I didn't think I'd be able to go as now I need an electric wheelchair / powerchair to manage independently but as luck would have it a fellow committee member had recently travelled to Mexico successfully in her chair.   So before I had time to think too much I took the "bull by it's horns" & said I'd go. If I was going that far I wanted to see as much as possible - I've deteriorated over the years so don't know what I'll be able to manage in the future - so do as much as I can while I can. Also the damp, cold British winter is physically painful so some dry heat would be very welcome. Initially I planned to use an independent travel agent who'd been recommended as having planned holidays for people with a health co...

10 Things I learned or wouldn't have been wìthout on my latest travels.

1) Book flights before your travel insurance.  I did it the other way round not realizing I had a 24 hours cooling off period with the flights. I was within this cooling off time when I realised I needed to change my return flight (to avoid snowy Chicago) but as I needed to change the date due to there being no direct flights from Orlando back to London, I incurred additional insurance costs. 2) Speak to the assistance team for the airline you are travelling with directly & explain in detail what your needs are.  3) Ask for the telephone number you can ring for assistance when you get dropped off at the airport if you need help with luggage.  NB - this is different to the porter service that costs £35 at Heathrow. I was travelling alone so getting from the threshold to the checking in desk wheeling a suitcase with a hand in a splint whilst steering an electric wheelchair would have been hard.  4) Ask if a bag containing medical equipment / medìcation can be allow...

Introduction - August 2024

Let me introduce myself - I'm Jenny although on a Monday & sometimes inbetween I'm called Brown Owl as I've been running a Brownie Pack ever since I was 18 years old.  I was born with Cerebral Palsy & have collected additional conditions as time passed at one point it felt like I was working through the alphabet, a bit like the I Spy books that were popular when I was little - tick off arthritis, look out for bronchitis ..... So when I adventure outside I use an electric powered wheelchair - a Quickie Salsa. I love trying all sorts of crafts & use them as a distraction from pain, something else for my brain to concentrate on. I'm not saying I'm particularly good at any of them but it's fun trying & I'm proud of what I achieve.  Results from a bookbinding class I did as part of the Margate bookie festival Each month there is the opportunity to paint along with Darcy via zoom thanks to Oddfellow's & a...
